چکیده

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed in order to map with nanometer resolution the local quasi-particle density of states in superconducting proximity structures. Our experimental configuration is unique, in that the tunneling current flows in parallel to the interfaces between different materials. We focus here on the measurement of bound and resonant states, arising from multiple Andreev reflections of quasi-particles propagating in a plane perpendicular to the tunneling current. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Spin-polarized proximity effect in superconducting junctions

We study spin dependent phonomena in superconducting junctions in both ballistic and diffusive regimes. For ballistic junctions we study both ferromagnet / sand d-wave superconductor junctions and two dimensional electron gas / s-wave superconductor junctions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the exchange field alway suppresses the conductance while the Rashba spin-orbit couplin...

Scanning tunneling microscope studies of the superconductor proximity effect

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are employed in studies of the proximity effect between normal metals and superconductors. The experimental configuration is unique, in that the tunneling current flows in parallel to the interfaces between different materials. The samples are superconducting wires consisting of ordered arrays of submicron diameter normal-metal filaments, either Cu...

High-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy of magnetic impurity induced bound states in the superconducting gap of Pb thin films.

Tunneling spectra for individual atoms and dimers of Mn and Cr adsorbed on superconducting Pb thin films were measured by a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Multiple-resonance structures within the superconducting gap on the adsorbates were resolved and interpreted as the magnetic impurity-induced bound states associated with different scattering channels. The experiment demonstra...

The Effect of Structural Parameters on the Electronic States and Oscillator Strength of a Resonant Tunneling Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector

In this paper a resonant tunnelling quantum well infrared photodetector (RT-QWIP) is discussed. Each period of this photodetector structure comprises of a resonant tunnelling structure (AlAs/AlGaAs/AlAs) nearby a quantum well (AlGaAs/GaAs). In this photodetector, photocurrent is produced when an electron makes a transition from the ground state of the well to an excited state which is coupled t...

Probing the Superconducting Proximity Effect in NbSe2 by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy.

Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy has been used as a local probe of the superconducting proximity effect across a normal metal–superconductor interface of a short coherence length superconductor. Both the topography and the local electronic density of states were measured on a superconducting NbSe 2 crystal decorated with nanometer-size Au islands. The presence of a quasiparticle bound st...
